WHAT IS DEEP CONDITIONING?

Let’s start with the basics: deep conditioning is the process of applying a nourishing, moisturizing product to your hair. It is a great way to treat locks that are damaged, brittle or weak. It acts by rebuilding the hair fiber, bringing back moisture, strength, and shine![2]Cosmetology License. (2016, October 11). HOW DO YOU DO THE TREATMENT?

It may seem complicated, but deep conditioning is quite simple! There are 4 steps you need to follow, and they are:

  1. Wash your hair;
  2. Apply the deep conditioner;
  3. Let it act (according to the instructions of the product);
  4. Use heat if necessary (again, read the instructions);
  5. Rinse your hair with cold or lukewarm water!

To know details about each step, go read this post!

TYPES OF DEEP CONDITIONERS

Although the application of the product isn’t hard, there’s something kind of tricky when it comes to deep conditioning and that is to know which type of product you should choose. There are 2 types of deep conditioners you can choose from, the protein-based kind and the moisturizing kind!

Protein-based deep conditioners (aka protein treatments) strengthen the hair, avoid hair loss and increase its elasticity. Because it is composed of hydrolyzed protein and ceramides, it should be done in-between intervals of time – between 2 to 4 months. However, that depends on the overall aspect of your hair. If your locks are dyed, this treatment is for you!

Moisturizing deep conditioners are popularly known as moisturizing hair masks!  They nourish and moisture the mane by replacing the water that composes our hair fiber. This type of deep conditioner should be used especially during winter and autumn, by owners of all hair types.

WHEN IS DEEP CONDITIONING INDICATED?

As said in the above section, every woman can benefit from deep conditioning – they just need to know which type of product is most suitable for them. However, there are some aspects that may mean you need to deep condition more frequently!

  • If you have curly hair, your locks will need moisture more often, so make sure you apply a moisturizing deep conditioner weekly!
  • If your hair is chemically treated or colored, you also need to make sure that it is hydrated and nourished, so put deep conditioner on it!
  • Do you have super-damaged hair? Is it falling all the time, looking dry, and overall lifeless? Then it’s time you add deep conditioning (both protein and moisturizing ones) to your capillary schedule!

If the cases above don’t relate to you, then you can deep condition once a month, maybe only during wintertime, or even twice a year! It all depends on your mane’s health!
