Are you using shampoo and conditioner properly?

Find out if you’re washing your hair the right way!

It may seem very basic, but be aware that washing your hair the right way is not that simple! There are a number of things that you should take into account when choosing shampoo and conditioner, as well as when washing your hair! Oftentimes, the reason your hair doesn’t look as nice or healthy is actually the way you are washing it[1]Muto, J. (2017, May 25). How to wash hair correctly: Tips from experts. TODAY.Com. https://www.today.com/style/how-wash-hair-correctly-tips-experts-t111714. So, let’s find out if you are washing your hair the right way?

As we said before, washing your hair the right way involves the moment before the actual cleansing: the choice of shampoo and conditioner[2]Cafasso, J. (2020, July 13). What’s the Proper Order to Use Shampoo and Conditioner While Bathing? Healthline. … Continue reading. And for doing that correctly you must consider something very important! Your HAIR TYPE!

  • Do you have fine or thick hair?
  • Is your mane curly, wavy, or straight?
  • Oily or dry?
  • Natural or dyed?

All those aspects are important to know since shampoos, conditioners and even hair masks can be specific to people with certain hair types! If you have curly hair, for example, you should buy products that are specific for curls or waves, since they have nutrients and substances that activate their shape! A recommendation of a great line for curly hair is this one, from the Brazilian brand, Nazca:

Besides considering your hair type, take a look at the ingredients on the products. Try to stay away from silicone products if your hair is already oily, for instance. Also, try to choose products with natural ingredients, sulfate-free and paraben-free! By doing so, your hair won’t be exposed to a lot of chemicals, which may cause damage.

There are a lot of great brands out there that focus on natural cosmetics, such as Boni Natural! It is a vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly Brazilian brand. They have an awesome Linseed and Argan oil hair mask that you can apply after shampooing and conditioning your mane!

Now that you know what to consider when choosing shampoo and conditioner, let’s move on to washing your hair properly! But be aware that each person knows their hair the best, so the instructions we are going to give below may not suit you, since it is very general, and that’s ok! If the way you are washing your hair doesn’t look anything like the “proper” way, but it isn’t causing any damage to your hair or scalp, don’t worry about it!

How to wash your hair correctly

SHAMPOOING:

  1. First of all, start by checking the temperature of the water: it must be warm to cold, not hot! Hot water can make the hair look frizzy and lifeless.
  2. Put a small amount of shampoo (the size of a grape) on your hand and apply it to your scalp.
  3. Massage the scalp and pay attention to it, since it’s where oiliness and residues concentrate. However, do work the shampoo throughout the whole hair, ok?
  4. Rinse it well – and remember: warm or cold water only!

NOW, IT’S TIME FOR THE CONDITIONER:

  1. Put an amount of conditioner (about the size of 2 grapes) on your hands.
  2. Apply it to the length of your hair! Try to avoid the scalp, unless your root is really dry or frizzy.
  3. Let the conditioner act for a while (3-5 minutes) and use this moment to comb your hair.
  4. Rinse your hair with cold or lukewarm water!

After those steps, you may use a treatment mask or apply a leave-in product, such as a curl activator or a natural oil! Easy, right?

Reading today’s post, you must have realized that choosing the right shampoo and conditioner and washing your hair in the most appropriate way is no big deal! However, you must pay attention to details such as the peculiarities of your hair, the amount of product you apply to the strands, which part of the hair, in addition to the temperature of the water you are using!
